Real Help for Aging Skin
Specialized, low-dose topical estrogen creams may increase the amount of collagen in skin, resulting in marked improvement in skin elasticity and firmness (after six months of treatment). A study published in the International Journal of Dermatology also showed:
- Decreased wrinkle depth and pore size by 61 to 100 percent.
- Increased skin thickness by up to 15 percent.
- Increased skin lipid sebum production by 35 percent.
- Markedly improved skin hydration.
Estrogen is a group of hormones mostly responsible for female reproduction. The hormones are produced in the ovaries and, when a woman is pregnant, in the placenta. Estrogen is also produced in smaller amounts in the adrenal glands and in the testicles in males. In addition to reproduction, estrogen has effects on other parts of the body--including the skin.
Age Management:
According to the results of a study at the University of California, San Francisco, School of Medicine, as reported in 2001 in the American Journal of Clinical Dermatology, estrogen plays a role in preventing and reversing skin aging. The study found that post-menopausal women treated with topical and systemic estrogen maintained higher levels of skin moisture and collagen, which helped to prevent wrinkling.
Wound Healing:
The same University of California, San Francisco, School of Medicine study noted that estrogen may aid in wound healing. The study cited research showing that topical estrogen treatment accelerated and improved wound healing in elderly subjects. The study also said the effects of estrogen on scarring are unclear.
Fighting Acne:
A lack of estrogen or an overproduction of androgens can lead to increased acne, especially in women. This is because androgens, which are male sex hormones, regulate the production of sebum, or skin oil. When your sebum levels are increased, it makes it more likely that your pores will become clogged, which leads to acne. Estrogen acts as a check on androgen levels, which is why birth control pills containing estrogen are an effective treatment against acne.
